John and Susan Read
Blegan -
Mohair and Natural Wool Products
At Prospect Farm, near
Praze-an-Beeble, John and Sue Read have a traditional pedigree farm stock
of Angora goats, Wensleydale, Shetland and Dorset sheep, plus Jersey and
Angus cows.
|
 |
Angora goats originally came from northern Turkey
and produce Mohair not Angora wool (which actually comes from the Angora
Rabbit). The goats are shorn twice a year.
The first two clips, and sometimes the third,
produces "Kid Mohair" which is a fine yarn ideal for delicate knitwear.
The third, fourth and fifth clips from the young
adult goats produce a heavier yarn suitable for socks and heavier knitwear
ideal for winter mohair jumpers and cardigans.
After the fifth clip, the now fully adult Angora
goat produces a coarser yarn ideally suited for mohair jackets, trousers,
coats and rugs, or throws. |
Blegan sells an extensive
range of throws, socks, scarves, shawls and other products made from their
natural, rare breed wools and mohair.

|
 |
Our luxurious throws are all made from either mohair, mohair and wool
or pure wool.
They are very light and warm and come in a variety of
colours, patterns and sizes. |
|

|
The Socks are made from a blend of mainly mohair with a small amount of
nylon.
Resulting in a sock that keeps your feet warm in winter but is also
very hardwearing.
They come in all sizes, colours and weights. |
|
 |
Our yarn is not the same as that used in mass produced sweaters. The
difference being our yarn is not processed using chemicals that destroy
the natural softness of the fleece. Therefore it shouldn't irritate your
skin.
The sweater shown here is typical of the quality and exclusive look that our
hand knitted items create.
We take commissions for anything hand knitted,
whether it be a Christening Shawl or items for ladies, men or children. |
If you would prefer to knit something yourself we can supply yarn in hanks
(if you wish to dye it) or ready balled.
The yarns we have in stock at the
moment are:
80% Mohair 20% Wool. O.K.
90% Kid Mohair 10% Wool. 2 and 3-ply.
100% Pure, Wensleydale Wool. D.K.
100% Pure, Dark Brown, Jacob Wool.
100% Pure, Shetland Wool. White & Coloured. D.K

 |
These finely woven scarves are made from Kid Mohair and are equally
impressive when worn for day or evening wear or any special occasion.
They
come in various sizes and can be hand dyed. |
 |
These really warm scarves, made from either Pure Shetland Wool or Shetland
blended with a small amount of Cashmere have a unique feel and a very
exclusive look that can't be found in the High Street. |
