Emma West Ceramics, established in 2000, is a small, rural, studio business concerned primarily with the production and development of a range of unique and beautiful handmade ceramic tiles using white stoneware clay and porcelain, sourced from clay pits at St. Agnes on the North Cornish coast.
 

The tiles are individually impressed with seasonally available leaves and flowers direct from the surrounding gardens making every single one unique. The technique is simple but the skill in the glazing of the tiles has been refined over years. The palette is not broad, subtle greens and blues with bright turquoise adding occasional highlights.
 

It is the plants themselves that contribute the endless variety to these little works of art. From the Snowdrops and Primroses of the Spring, to the Fuchsias and Honeysuckles of late Autumn, there is always an ever changing array of plants, and tiles, available. The tiles are available mounted in a range of sizes from a simple, single tile to groups of up to twenty or more. Frames are made using American poplar, the warm tones of its shadowy grain echoing and softening the otherwise untreated wood.  The individual plants featured are identified on the reverse of each frame and a wall hanging fixture attached. These pieces can be hung in direct sunlight and will tolerate humid environments, so are ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, garden rooms or conservatories.

The groupings of the tiles vary with the seasons and with the glazes employed, the style of the finished pieces can ultimately range from the photographic to the abstract.

A range of work using Porcelain is currently being developed in addition to the stoneware pieces. This whiter, finer, smoother clay brings an iridescence to the glazes and an abstraction to the plant impression giving an added quality to the finished tile.

Commissions are undertaken for larger interior tiling projects.
