Nic
moved to Cornwall with his wife Jackie in 1975, and following his
studies in Studio Pottery at Cornwall College, was invited by Janet
Leach to join the Leach Pottery in St Ives.
He was the last student to be a part of the
production team at St Ives, and worked with Trevor Corser and Jason Wason.
Under
the leadership of Janet Leach, his time at The Leach Pottery was a
formative period in his career, and he had the opportunity of making
his own individually designed pots to sell through the showroom and
local galleries. |

Trelowarren Pottery
In 1981,
he converted a stable and set up his own pottery on the Trelowarren Estate, near Helston, the historic home of the Vyvyan
family. He designed and built his own 50cubic foot kiln, which is
reduction fired to 1285’C with propane gas.
Late in
2005 he moved from Trelowarren to Nic Harrison Ceramics, in
Helston, where he continues to produce an extensive range of domestic
kitchenware and individually designed stoneware and porcelain pottery,
thrown on an electric ‘Alsager’ wheel.

Much of Nic’s work is made in the locally produced, West Country
stoneware clay. The glazes used on the surface of the biscuit fired pot
are all considered to be traditional glazes of The Leach Pottery. Celadon,
a sage green, a black to rust Tenmoku and Ying Ching a grey Celadon.

Decoration is achieved by applying oxides of Cobalt, Iron, Copper or
Manganese to the glaze surface. This characteristically produces a soft
indefinite line.
Nic is
concentrating on making a number of pots in a locally produced Porcelain
clay.
He has found this to be quite a challenge.
