The Trecarne Pottery showroom near Mullion on the Lizard

Michel Roux
Studio Pottery

Trecarne
Mullion, Cornwall

Michel Roux has his workshop on the beautiful Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, where he creates a striking range of both decorative and functional pottery. He is much inspired by the energy of the Lizard sea and wind, by the amazing colours of the sky, the sea, and the rocks, and by the local beaches.

Michel Roux was born in Aix-en-Provence in France. His upbringing was artistic, his father being a painter. He started potting in England in 1978 when he was living in Surrey and built his own wood-fired kiln. When he later returned to France, Michel set up a workshop in the Pyrenees and built another kiln, this time gas-fired.

Michel and his wife Eugénie saw Trecarne Pottery for sale when visiting their children who had moved back to England.  They decided to settle here too and bought the pottery which was formerly run by Norman Underhill,  famous for his ceramic sculptures.

Michel's son Stephan built a new traditional timber frame workshop and showroom, made from local ash and chestnut held together with wooden pegs. Michel was able to start business in July 2003.

"I have an inexhaustible stream of new ideas for my pottery and am much inspired by the energy of the Lizard sea and wind, by the amazing colours of the sky and the rocks, and by the local beaches which I much enjoy in the company of my two grand daughters.

I like to work with simple shapes but put a lot of thought into how my pottery will be used. My glazes, in contrast, are subtle mixes of colour that are painterly influences. I aim for spontaneity in making and pleasure in using."

"All my pottery is unique; I never make the same piece twice. There may be series of cups or bowls but they will never be identical. My work is stoneware, fired to 1280°C, and is robust enough to be used daily, and I hope it will be used and not left on a shelf to gather dust."
